How to Maintain your Solar System

After researching possible panels and inverters and going through various quotes it’s time to purchase your solar PV system and save money. However, you might not be aware that maintaining your panels properly is the best way to ensure the efficiency of your system. The majority of solar systems require very little maintenance and if your roof slopes more than 10 degrees, the rain may actually clean them for you.

Although most panels are somewhat self-cleaning, you’ll still have to give them some TLC occasionally. Dust, bird poop and other debris can build up and reduce the system’s efficiency.

Below is some guidance on cleaning your solar panels:

  • Check the manufacturer’s instructions or website to find out if the recommend specific cleaning products or techniques for their panels.
  • You should clean your panels on a cooler day, preferably in the early morning or late afternoon.
  • Start by using your garden hose on low pressure to wash dust and dirt first then hop on your roof carefully and scrub them gently. Make sure you use a soft cloth or a sponge as harsh products may damage your panels.
  • Be careful getting on your roof and do not stand on your panels.

Although you can run the most basic maintenance on your system yourself, such as cleaning the panels and making sure the green light on your invert is on, we suggest you get a Clean Energy Council accredited installer such as ASM Solar and Electrical to perform more in-depth maintenance every 5 years. Our regular solar maintenance checks include the following:

  • Cleaning the solar panels and making sure they are secure and defect-free.
  • Checking to see if any fittings have deteriorated.
  • Inspecting wiring to make sure it is not damaged or deteriorated.
  • Performing an electrical check to see if everything is working as intended.
  • Making sure all cables are securely attached.
  • Reviewing your inverter display panel for faults.
  • Inspecting your isolator switch and making sure emergency shutdown procedures are clearly displayed

Despite your best intentions, sometimes things do go wrong so we recommend holding onto all paperwork after you get a solar PV installed because if defects occur, they may be covered under warranty.
